Financial intermediation in Bulgaria kept deepening at a fast pace in the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007. The pace of wealth accumulation accelerated strongly to 24.6% annually as we keep the outlook for strong wealth expansion in 2007. While the households’ investments in government securities sharply contracted in Q4 2006, household holdings of shares keep expanding robustly in Q1 of 2007. Expansion of savings channelled to the banking system remained robust, at a range of 24-25% annually. Meanwhile the pension insurance savings continued to grow. Households’ investments in mutual funds increased mainly because of the impressive expansion of contractual funds. That is, in the long run mutual funds would tend to become a real alternative to the banks as institutions managing households’ savings.
Wealth and the Finance Industry in Bulgaria provides information on the entire distribution of personal wealth by covering a broad range of households’ assets and liabilities. We offer both macroeconomic overview and microeconomic analysis of the features of financial intermediaries essential for households’ saving behavior. The objective of the analysis is to reveal the effectiveness of financial intermediation in the process of wealth accumulation and transformation of savings into capital. The product consists of comprehensive quarterly survey and brief monthly updates. Quarterly reports are available both in print and in electronic format. Users of electronic format have access to ready-to-print document as well as data series in spread sheets.
