In late December 2010, Industry Watch subscribers received the new issue of the regular report on cost of labor Biggest Cities Review.
Total employment in Bulgaria shrank to under 3.1 million people in the 12 months to September 2010. That is a decline of 213,000 jobs compared to a year ago and 272,000 jobs less than 2008 which saw the highest employment levels. By that indicator, the economy is currently back to its levels fours years ago.
Only 41% of the population are being employed in some way, according to the NSI regular household survey. Unemployment does not look alarmingly high, especially compared to other EU members. However, over 1 million people aged 25-64 do not participate on the labor market at all. We have another 1.44 million over 65 who are out of the labor market too.
